BASF and Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária (Embrapa) officially launched the Cultivance Production System, a milestone for Brazilian science, as it contains the first genetically modified soybean fully developed in Brazil.


Threats prompt reallocation of biotech education funds

The University of Florida will re-allocate a donation intended to improve the public’s understanding of science after public threats to the researcher. The Monsanto Company donated $25,000 to support the Talking Biotech program, a science communication effort that provided on-campus workshops to train scientists about how to engage the public on agricultural biotechnology. The university will reallocate the funds to the campus food pantry.


Partnership to accelerate rice research and product development in China

Dow AgroSciences LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company, has entered into a collaboration agreement with the Institute of Crop Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (ICS-CAAS). Under the agreement, Dow AgroSciences grants ICS-CAAS a royalty-free, non-transferable research and commercialization license for its proprietary Exzact Precision Genome Editing Technology to be used in rice in China.


Soils protect the natural environment

In celebration of the International Year of Soil 2015 (IYS), the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) is coordinating a series of activities throughout the year to educate the public about the importance of soil. September’s theme is “Soils Protect the Natural Environment.”


Activist group questions EPA’s commitment to saving bees

Friends of the Earth submitted a Freedom of Information Act to the Environmental Protection Agency requesting meeting minutes and communications between the EPA Office of the Administrator, the Office of Pesticide Programs and representatives of the pesticide industry. Friends of the Earth submitted this FOIA due to concerns raised by beekeepers around undue pesticide industry influence on the development of the EPA’s pollinator and pesticide policies.
