Grain markets trade mixed Monday

The grain markets traded mixed Monday ahead of the USDA Stocks and Acreage reports tomorrow. After the trade had seen significant weather premiums in the last few weeks, if seemed as profit taking and long liquidation was the theme today. The average trade estimate for June 1, 2015 stocks is 4.557 billion bushels with a range of 4.35-4.7 billion bushels. The June 1, 2014 stocks number was 3.852 billion bushels. The weekly export inspections came in at 1.04 million tonnes, suggesting firmness in demand.


Big rice production area experiencing extreme drought

Water for rice fields in the Chao Phraya River Basin of the central region of Thailand is needed for the use by the population rather than growing rice. Reuters reported that Thailand’s Agriculture Minister has “requested” that farmers delay rice planting until August. Reports are that 22 of the 76 provinces of the area are fighting drought conditions.


Soil scientists want a Google Doodle

The Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) is leading an effort to get soil its very own Google Doodle on World Soil Day. Google Doodles are animations of the Google logo that display at the start of a Google search. All soil lovers (and if you like food and quality of life, that’s you) can write to in support of a soil Google Doodle.

Is your plant nutrition program healthy?

One of the most important things you can do throughout the season to help increase yield potential is to ensure your crops have adequate nutrition. You can check nutrient levels by working with your agronomist to take multiple tissue samples throughout the season (often in concert with soil samples) to determine if critical nutrients are lacking.


Ohio State free webinar on June 30 to address legal use of drones

A big concern in agriculture is how and in what situations unmanned aircraft systems/drones can be legally used. Without finalized Federal Aviation Administration rules and interim rules that seem conflicting to many people, there is a need for clarification. For that reason, those engaged in agriculture can learn about the current and future status for the use of drones in agriculture during a webinar on June 30 being conducted by the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at The Ohio State University.
