ISAAA launches infographic on food and agri-biotech

Coinciding with the celebration of the World Food Prize (WFP) Foundation Oct. 16-19, 2013, to honor three distinguished crop biotechnologists, ISAAA launched a new infographic on food and agricultural biotechnology to raise public understanding on challenges of feeding the world of tomorrow. The infographic is part of a new series of materials that will highlight the importance of advances in agricultural biotechnology and its role in ensuring food security of the growing global population.

The WFP Foundation hailed Prof. Marc Van Montagu, Dr. Mary-Dell Chilton, and Dr. Robert T. Fraley as recipients of the World Food Prize 2013 for their independent, individual breakthrough achievements in founding, developing, and applying modern agricultural biotechnology. A four-day long symposium "The 2013 Borlaug Dialogue" themed around "Biotechnology, Sustainability and Climate Volatility" took place from Oct. 16-19, 2013, at Des Moines, Iowa, USA. It looked ahead to the next century of advances in agricultural research and application with focus on the issues that Dr. Borlaug would have viewed as critical to nourish the world's growing population. The winners called on the world to embrace the seeds they helped develop, despite the controversy and criticism that threatens to limit the future of biotech crops.

I am a farmer from India growing Bt Cotton since 2004. Prior to the introduction of Bt Cotton, I had been growing non Bt Variety & non Bt Hybrid Cotton since 1986. Therefore I know how this technology helps our farmers. Those days cotton boll worm was our major concern. We had to spend lot of our time & resources to combat this problem alone.Our yield level was also low as the flowers, squares & bolls were damaged by the boll worms & adversely impacted our yield. Thanks to the technology, we not only make make substantial saving in pesticide cost, we are able to achieve higher yield. However we've other challenges to be addressed. Weed is the major problem. Hand weeding is prohibitively expensive. Weeds not only compete with our main crop for water & nutrition, they provide alternate host for sucking pest. For instance " Mealy Bug "which feeds on a variety plants first appear in weeds and feed on it. As the cotton crop grows they start damaging the the crop. I had been to Des Moines on the invitation from TATT to receive the"Kleckner Award for Advancement of Trade and technology"on 15th Oct. I chanced to interact with few Cotton global farmers, who have been using herbicide resistant cotton besides pest resistance. They said they don't face sucking pest menace as we the Indian farmers face. I feel it may be due to lesser weeds.With a single crop viz cotton and with a single trait ( viz Pest resistance ) we the cotton farmers are benefited. From a nation which was importing cotton prior to 2002, we are now in a position to export. More than the developed nations, Indian farmers need such ground breaking & cutting technology. If we have to face the challenge of feeding our growing population we must embrace new technology
