Iowa livestock producer claims operation lost due to GMO corn

An Iowa man raising cattle and hogs told the Food Nation Radio Network he was forced to quit farming when GMO corn made his animals sterile.

In an interview with Michael Serio, Iowa farmer Jerry Rosman said he lost his family farm due the corn he was feeding his livestock.

Rosman said he used hybrids in the past and started to use GMO corn in feed in 1997 without any trouble, but things changed in 2000 when he switched to a different company’s genetics with a new genetically modified trait.

Starting in 2000, most of Rosman’s animal were unable to reproduce with a low sperm count in males and females showing false pregnancies. The pigs that were reproducing had smaller litters. By adjusting the type of corn used, Rosman concluded the corn with the genetically modified trait he started using in 2000 was causing the problem. Continued losses and his shrinking herd forced him to close his farm two years later.

A 2006 publication from the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA) reports at least 65 million metric tons of GM corn grains are used in livestock diets annually and extensive testing and a long approval process accompany every GM crop introduction.

The resource explains safety concerns on the use of GM crops as feed ingredients involve three questions:

  • Are GM crops safe as feeds for livestock?
  • Is animal performance affected by GM crops?
  • Could transgenic materials be transferred to and accumulate in milk, meat, and eggs?

“Feeding trials have been conducted to examine the safety and efficacy of GM feeds for farm livestocks. Based on these studies, there is no evidence of significantly altered nutritional composition, deleterious effects, or the occurrence of transgenic DNA or protein in animal products derived from animals fed with GM feed ingredients.”

Additionally, a study by University of Nebraska researchers found no difference between cattle grazing genetically enhanced corn hybrids and their non-genetically enhanced parent hybrid.

For more information regarding genetically modified corn, read John Maday's article: Scientists call for retraction of GM corn paper.

This has got to be a joke? Not the article, which is extremely serious. But the final 2 paragraphs, one of which features a call for a retraction of the Seralini GM maize study, which found that GM maize caused increased tumours, organ damage and premature mortality in rats; the other claiming "a study by University of Nebraska researchers found no difference between cattle grazing genetically enhanced corn hybrids and their non-genetically enhanced parent hybrid". Look at this last "study" claiming safety for the GMO. No details of animal numbers used, no details of how diets were characterised (was testing done to ensure the non-GM diet was non-GM?)--and it was only over 60 days. It doesn't even seem to be a toxicity study that looked for health effects, but a performance study. And it doesn't seem to have been peer reviewed and published in a journal. The Seralini study showed that the serious problems only show up 4-7 months after beginning feeding with the GM corn. Please compare the two studies and see which is more detailed, which is the long-term one, and which actually specifies the health effects the researchers looked for!

Lise, did you read the study? At the end it says in bold type "This study has been peer reviewed".

Making your decisions off of a "study" that the has been determined not scientifcally sound is not the best judgement call. http://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/press/news/121128.htm

It was backing in fall of 2003 that my uncle had a field of non-GMO corn stocks next to a neighbors field of genetic modified Roundup ready BT corn. Since the fields were so close together my uncle asked him if he could graze his cattle on his field & so my uncle fenced both fields of corn stalks. Amazingly my uncles cattle stayed in the field of non-GMO corn stocks and ate them up completely and then went over to my neighbors field to eat on the BT corn stalks last. It was like my uncles cattle could tell that there was something not normal about the Roundup ready BT corn stalks & chose to eat them only as a last resort! That was proof enough for me that genetically modified crops are completely different from their non-GMO counterparts!

I should also add to my comment above that now my uncle & some of my cousins who farm including myself are all now certified organic farmers or certified organic dairy farmers! Switching over to organic dairying was the best decision we ever made! The animals are so much more healthier now!

Clint, I'm not sure how many people actually follow the links? So a bit from that link. Per Bergman, who led EFSA’s work, said: “EFSA’s analysis has shown that deficiencies in the Séralini et al. paper mean it is of insufficient scientific quality for risk assessment. In addition, several national organisations were independently mandated by Member States to assess this study. These reviews have demonstrated a consensus among a significant part of the EU risk assessment community that the conclusions of Séralini et al. are not supported by the data in the published paper. We believe the completion of this evaluation process has brought clarity to the issue.”

I was just at a meeting with UNL Extension. The reports of cattle prefering to eat in non GMO corn is not new. In the first year of the UNL study, they seem to notice that the cows were in the non GMO stalks more. So they did a further research study looking at this area to see if there was something to the GMO corn that was adverse to the cows. Rick Rasby. Keep in mind, the stalk is the last thing the cow will eat, instead going for the corn and leaf of the plant first. What they discovered was that there was more corn on the ground in the non GMO corn, which helped them explain why cows seem to spend more time in that area first. Over time, they grazed both fields

California CARB fuel was close to zero ethanol in our fuel in 1992.. 1992 fuel price about $1.40 per gallon. Ethanol push from fed EPA and friends pushed ethanol to 5.6% and we paid more for our fuel. Fed EPA and Big oil refiners pushed the oxygenate to 10% and we paid more. Now BP GMO fuel is pushing for over $1.00 in corporate welfare with 15% of the fuel market while cutting back Oil and refining Will BP GMO fuel patents generate credit trade income from the Big oil industry with the Queen Mother help. The Queen banker friends may want a share. So. how big does California ethanol bill need to be to qualify for the EPA waiver?

South Dakota  |  December, 04, 2012 at 11:45 AM

Cory the one big difference between non-GMO corn stalks & roundup ready Bt corn stalks is that the Bt corn stalks are much harder & thus makes it harder for the cows to chew on! If I were a cow I would rather chew on the softer stalk of the non-GMO corn! My uncles beef cattle licked the non-GMO corn field clean before even touching the Bt corn stalks!

my family stays the hell away from all food that is not Organic because anything that is not organic is made with gmos, and the cheapest and worst quality ingredients there are. Do you really think these large corporations actually care about their consumer's health?? No!! All they care about is PROFIT. MONEY..Please watch "GENETIC ROULETTE, THE GAMBLE OF YOUR LIFE". If you care about the health and wellbeing of yourself, your familiy, your future generations, watch the documentary and avoid genetically modified foods at all costs !!! Yes, fast food is all gmo. Major depopulation programs in effect NOW!!! Air chemtrails, food gmos, water floride, vaccines, medicines are all contaminated and toxic on purpose. There is a war for your health and longevity happening now and you need to wake up and stop being pathetic sheeple zombies !!! EVERYTHING IS NOT OKAY !! You need to stop feeding your kids garbage. What kind of parents are you, subjecting your children to genetically altered food??! Havent you seen the test results that show all mice fed gmos, developed grotesqe tumors and died prematurely, and the mice offspring were infertile?? This fact that people dont care about what they eat disgusts me ! No wonder why the whole country is fat and unhealthy. You are what u eat and you deserve what u get if u refuse to educate yourself on what you expose your body to everyday. The kids are the ones who suffer the most because they count on the adults to feed them and trust their judgment. GO ORGANIC. Dont you know the world's rulers only eat Organic because the gmos are only for the stupid sheeple.??? Wake up america!!!

Thanks Karen for choosing to buy organic, when you buy organic you are supporting small local farmers who care about the well being of making sure the consumer is buying the best quality food product. Not only do we grow the some of the best quality food but make sure we protect the environment because we know that nature depends on us as much we depend on it! Some people would have you believe that organic food production can't feed the world but we always seem to grow enough food to feed our animals every year! Keep spreading the good word about organic!

So who is Lise Trimble and who does she/he work for? My guess is that this person (or pseudo-person) is on the payroll of one of the Corporate pro GMO machines. There is quite a network of them out there trolling the web for discussions like this and know how to spout their propaganda. The Seralini study showed the rat group fed the highest GMO concentration lived the longest. The rats fed nonGMO developed tumors too. If an overly simplistic conclusion were to be made it should be that we should eat more GMO and live longer! lol.

How can anyone smart enough to type fail to understand that for a company to knowingly poison and kill off their customers, as is claimed by "Truther...." and some others a little more delicately, is financial suicide. Yet you claim that the Monsanto types are only in it for the money. Ludicrous!

Please watch "Genetic Roulette, the gamble of our lives" by Jeffrey M. Smith and enlighten yourself about the truth about gmos, how it was introduced into the food supply, who approved it even after initial research proved it was dangorous , and how Monsanto said they couldnt afford to lose one cent, no matter the cost, even if it killed people. I will continue to raise awareness about the gmos and geoengineering in hopes that people will educate themselves and realize that their reality is the farthest from the truth.

I think we are in a huge experiment in which we are the guinea pigs. All big corporations try to cover up their mistakes and if the results are long term and hard to prove why not keep going vs admit you made a mistake? Latest French study showing 30% drop in sperme els over 15 years Is reason to think we may eventually just die out. My family eat organic and you can tell by the taste it is real food. Global warming skeptics are paid off why not GMO scientists? Think tobacco companies getting away literly with murder.

Paul
South Dakota  |  December, 06, 2012 at 05:17 PM

Bob, yes I understand there are some small conventional farmers out there trying to the produce the best food but the sad part is many conventional small farmers have fallen into the GMO trap! Some have been forced into buying GMO seed because big Monopolies like Monsanto seem to have a firm grip over the seed supply & thus limilting the seed supply to mostly GMO seed! Still every farmer has a choice to switch to organic farmering like I did & get out of the GMO trap! I realize not every farmer knows the dangers of GMOs & how terrible roundup herbicide is, but some farmers know that farmering with GMO crops & using them nasty chemicals is bad and just plain don't care! I apologize if my statement seems kind of harsh but I've seen enough evidence to convince me that Farming with genetically engineered crops & using toxic chemicals like roundup is very harmful to the environment, to animals & to humans! Chemical farming is only a dead end road that will never feed the world in the future & only lead to the destruction of the environment!

Since the introduction of RR soybeans, the use of soyoil as an edible oil in the US has drop to the point that this year it will be at a 25 year low. I would think that any smart soybean grower would be alarmed at the loss of this market. The reason is very clear, just ask Pepsi why they changed. It costs more to use RR soybean oil the other oils because it leaves the fryers. When they switched their fast food stores to Nextra canola oil the increased the profits by $2500 per store despite paying more for the oil. RR soybean oil is not as good to use as non gmo soybean oil. Look at how much more frequently they have to shut down operations and clean up vs non gmo soybean oil. They answer this by switching to different oils.

Maxine, Do you have proof that a company like Monsanto would not knowingly kill off or poison it's own customers? All you have to do is review Monsanto's history, and you can see how evil this company really is! Look at what Monsanto did in Anniston Alabama, They dump toxic PCBs right next to a poor black community! If you know anything about PCBs you know that they are very toxic and cause cancer! Now why did Monsanto dump these toxic PCBs next to that poor black community, because they said they could not afford to LOSE ONE DOLLAR OF PROFIT! So why on earth would you trust a company like Monsanto 2 say that GMO foods is safe? Think about it Monsanto invested billions of dollars & millions of hours of research & development into GMO crops before they were approved by all the US Regulatory agencies! Now I don't think they were gonna let all that work and money be just thrown away just because the US Regulatory system might have a problem with them! Of course not, so what do they do? They lie & Manipulate all the data to make it look like GMO food is safe! Not only that but they have Convinced the FDA that GMO food is substantially equivalent or the same is conventional non-GMO food! They won't even allow the FDAs own Scientists 2 do their own independent studies on GMO food! Why, because Monsanto's patent rights protect them from any other Research firm studying GMO food other then themselves(Monsanto) from doing the Necessary research on GMO food! Look on the web and research you won't find anywhere where it talks about that the FDA's own Scientists have ever done research on GMO food! Monsanto wants to keep it that way so they don't find out that GMO food is harmful to humans! No GMO labels means freedom 4 Monsanto

We have fed nothing but GMO corn to our cattle for years. Excellent breedback, good weaning weights, very little to no health issues. GMO corn stalks grazed also. Most of our cows last 12-13 years, breeding every year. It is called freedom of choice, if everyone switched to organic farming, there would be no more premium for these producers, and there tune might change, especially with the lower yields and higher production costs.
