The seventh annual AgProfessional Editors’ Choice New Product of the Year Award winners represent some of the newest, most cutting edge technologies for the agriculture industry.
We believe these 10 represent the best and most innovative products introduced during 2013 for U.S. crop production in 2013 and the upcoming 2014 growing season. We picked these products as being important innovations for AgProfessional’s main audiences—agricultural retailers, crop consultants and farm managers. It’s these ag professionals who will likely use these products in their operations, sell to customers or recommend to clients.
We never solicit entries for the list of Top 10. Instead, we look back over the year’s worth of product announcements and materials provided to us during the year. Our research into picking the Top 10 stems from the information provided to the editorial staff of AgProfessional by companies or their public relations agencies and is followed up with web-based searches. We feel we have again selected innovative products that deserve the highest recognition as 2013 New Products of the Year.
It is challenging every year to sort through all of the products and determine which ones are just product upgrades or tweaks and which are truly innovative products. We are not concerned about whether the product will or has been a financial success but only that it was an innovative product introduced, on a more or less full-scale basis, between November 2012 and November 2013.
In considering a candidate for the Top 10, we consider the publicity the product generated and the excitement the companies showed when introducing their new product. And the product has to be geared toward AgProfessional’s audiences specifically. The judging was done by Richard Keller, editor, and Colleen Scherer, managing editor.
All of the products that made the Top 10 list were products that were announced on AgProfessional’s website—www.AgProfessional.com—during the year in the new product section. They were also mentioned in either “AgProfessional Weekly” or Dealer Update,” our weekly e-newsletters.
We take pride in picking the best of the best for a spot in the Top 10 list of Editors’ Choice New Products of the Year. We think it is a prestigious award. Companies have clearly valued being named to the Top 10 list and have shared the announced honor extensively. History also shows us companies appreciate winning the next step in the award process where one product will be named the Readers’ Choice Top New Product of 2013.

Dow AgroSciences Intrepid Edge Insecticide
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved federal registration for Dow AgroScience’s Intrepid Edge insecticide in July 2013. The new insecticide features fast knockdown and extended residual control of a broad spectrum of worm species in soybeans, peanuts and pecans.
“Intrepid Edge provides growers with fast knockdown of a broad spectrum of foliage and pod-feeding insects, including corn earworms, loopers and armyworms,” said Phil Jost, insecticides portfolio marketing leader for Dow AgroSciences.
“Intrepid Edge has shown extremely good efficacy against soybean pests,” said Gus Lorenz, Ph.D., entomologist from the University of Arkansas. “It has provided extended residual control that allows growers to control loopers and a second generation of earworms in one shot.”
Intrepid Edge insecticide consists of two modes of action—a Group 5 and Group 18 insecticide—in a ratio that optimizes knockdown and residual control. These two chemistries combine to allow growers to control worms resistant to other insecticides while remaining compatible in an effective integrated pest management program.
“A complex of worm species is often present in the field at the same time,” Lorenz said. “The two chemistries mix to give growers and consultant’s confidence that they’ll receive long-term control of all caterpillars.”
Intrepid Edge insecticide attacks targeted insects through contact and ingestion, and maintains effectiveness after rainfall or irrigation through excellent rainfastness. It demonstrates minimal impact on beneficial insects and does not flare mites.
Spinetoram and methoxyfenozide, the two active ingredients in Intrepid Edge, both received the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award.
Dow AgroSciences Sulfoxaflor
In May, Dow AgroSciences LLC announced that U.S. regulatory authorities had approved the new insecticidal active ingredient, sulfoxafl or to be marketed in the U.S. as Transform and Closer. The U.S. registration, and the Canadian registration, are the result of a Global Joint Review, which also included Australia.
Sulfoxafl or belongs to a novel chemical class called sulfoximines invented by Dow AgroSciences and offers extremely effective control of many important sap-feeding insect pests. It can be used in a large number of major crops, including cotton, soybean, citrus, pome/stone fruit, nuts, grapes, potatoes, vegetables and strawberries. Sulfoxafl or has unique attributes compared with other sap-feeding insecticides providing a signifi cant new tool for growers for many years to come.
“Sulfoxafl or is an ideal addition to integrated pest management programs. Its unique mode of action provides fast-acting control of harmful pests. Moreover, research data on sulfoxafl or continues to demonstrate lack of crossresistance with other insecticides,” said Daniel Kittle, vice president, research and development, Dow AgroSciences. “This innovative new option fits conveniently into growers’ existing programs to help them protect yields in a wide variety of foods and fiber around the globe.”
In 2012, Dow AgroSciences had a successful South Korean launch of sulfoxafl or and had a U.S. Section 18 Emergency Use Label in cotton.
DuPont Pioneer T Series Soybeans
A new series of Pioneer brand soybean products, developed through DuPont Pioneer’s Accelerated Yield Technology (AYT) process, offers North America a broad range of high-yielding varieties. The new line of soybean products, named the T Series and 39 new seed products were available in 2013.
Available in seven maturity groups, T Series products represented the largest number of soybean varieties advanced in a single year by Pioneer. The new T Series varieties succeeded the popular Pioneer Y Series soybeans introduced several years ago.
“The next generation T Series soybean products provide growers a total package that helps them gain the most from every acre,” said Don Schafer, DuPont Pioneer senior marketing manager – soybeans. “A step change from earlier offerings, the T Series is a direct result of the AYT system that allows Pioneer soybean breeders to maximize yield potential, agronomic traits and resistance to yield-robbing pests.”
Employing environment-specific markers to help optimize yields by geography, the AYT process pinpoints native trait genes for increased defensive trait protection and improved pest resistance packages tailored for specific geographies. AYT employs novel trait integration through a proprietary matrix of gene mapping, molecular breeding technologies and intense local field testing.
Among the new class of T Series soybeans, 34 varieties carried the Roundup Ready gene. There were two new Plenish high oleic varieties, five new products with the LibertyLink gene and two new varieties with the Roundup Ready/STS stack. Also, 32 products were soybean cyst nematode (SCN) resistant and 29 carried a major Phytophthora-resistant gene.
To distinguish the new T Series varieties, Pioneer initiated a new soybean product numbering system similar to the current nomenclature used for Pioneer brand corn products.
IN3 Applications The Plant Diagnostic Sample Submission App
Agricultural specialists and others who need to identify plants, plant diseases, insect pests and other plant problems have a new mobile application resource created by eight university labs, including Purdue’s Plant and Pest Diagnostic Laboratory (PPDL) and Ohio State’s C. Wayne Ellet Plant and Pest Diagnostic Clinic.
The Plant Diagnostic Sample Submission app includes submission forms with customized questions about agronomic crops, weeds, vegetables, houseplants, turf and more.
It was developed by IN3 (http://www.in3applications.com), located in the Purdue Research Park of West Lafayette. IN3 (pronounced IN-cubed) develops and markets mobile applications and educational tools for academic and commercial customers. IN3 is a start-up company with its origins in 3iD, a Purdue Research IT development group.
“The app is for anyone who wants to send a sample,” said Tom Creswell, PPDL director. “It guides users through the right questions for their submissions.”
It allows users to take and send digital photos and plant problem descriptions to any of the eight participating labs. In addition to Purdue and Ohio State, the university diagnostic labs involved are Alabama Cooperative Extension, University of Connecticut, University of Illinois Extension, University of Kentucky, Michigan State University and University of New Hampshire.
When submitting samples, users answer questions about the specific types of plant problems they need to identify.
Submissions are sent to the labs using the iPhone or iPad built-in mail app, which requires an e-mail account on the device.
PPDL charges its normal sample-handling fees for samples submitted through the app. Each of the diagnostic labs has specific fee policies, so users must check with their preferred lab for details.
The PPDL accepts submissions from the 48 contiguous states. International submissions are not accepted. At start up, Kentucky and New Hampshire laboratories were only accepting samples via the app from Extension educators and specialists who had a proper passcode.
The app is available for free download in the iTunes store.
Precision Laboratories Trident Bio-Inducer for Soybeans
Trident Bio-Inducer for Soybeans from Precision Laboratories is the first seed enhancement product with bio-inducer capabilities, providing growers and retailers with a tool to improve plant health and increase yields.
After a year of severe drought and record-high temperatures throughout most of the United States, growers were looking for assistance to enhance their crop management practices in 2013.
In announcing Trident Bio-Inducer, Terry Culp, vice president of seed and nutrient chemistries, Precision Laboratories, said, growers are making adjustments in their 2013 plans to consider the impact that last year’s drought and heat had on soil conditions and to be better prepared for the type of weather challenges they encountered. One tool soybean growers can use to prepare plants for potential stress conditions and to improve overall plant health is an inoculant.”
Unlike traditional soybean inoculants, Trident provides proprietary bacteria that are pre-stressed, allowing for 90-day survival on the seed, improved tolerance of seed-applied pesticides and performance across a broad range of spring environments. The bio-inducer within Trident causes nitrogen fixing bacteria to generate nodule-producing chemicals for rapid root nodulation.
The increased nodulation provided enhanced nitrogen fixation, unlocking the full genetic potential of the soybean seed and promoting enhanced plant development. Trident bacteria also replaced the soil rhizobia that degenerated due to soil conditions from the 2012 drought. The results were soybeans that developed earlier and were more robust both above and below ground.
“Plants only have one chance for a good healthy start” said Culp. “Enhanced early plant development enables the crop to better handle in-season stresses and have the ability to finish strong.”
Raven Industries Viper 4
Raven Industries, Inc. introduced new advances in precision agriculture technology with the new Viper 4 field computer during the eleventh annual Raven Innovation Summit held June 4-5. Viper 4 improves how customers manage critical machine functions, but more importantly, enhances the way data collected in the field is managed and utilized.
The Viper 4 is a fourth generation field computer. Yet it’s also the first in a new generation powered by the new Raven Operating Software, which integrates Raven’s full line of products into one connected platform, but is also designed to work with any equipment brand.
The Viper 4 field computer features a 12.1-inch responsive touch screen and sleek design with a rugged magnesium casing.
A customizable user interface utilizing new Raven Operating Software allows users to set up machine profiles, user profiles and grower-farm-field information, expediting job start-up and streamlining information management functionality.
“Data management is critical to our customers’ success. Viper 4 hardware, software and third-party applications will operate separate from each other, providing an open platform for data management with our Slingshot API platform and agX compatibility,” said Matt Burkhart, vice president and general manager for Raven’s Applied Technology Division.
Syngenta Agrisure Duracade Corn Rootworm Trait
Syngenta announced that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) fully deregulated Agrisure Duracade, enabling seed with the trait to be planted in 2014. Product sales are currently occurring.
Agrisure Duracade expresses a unique protein to control corn rootworm. It has a different mode of action to the company’s existing Agrisure RW trait. When combined these traits provide unmatched insect control: USDA data show a tenfold reduction in Western corn rootworm beetle emergence and superior performance against all comparable traits.
“This is the fourth introduction of a proprietary corn trait in the past six years, demonstrating our ability to rapidly deliver ground-breaking innovations to growers,” a Syngenta spokesman noted. The technology is available at a time when insect resistance is a rising challenge. Its proven dual mode of action will be indispensable for the eff ective management of corn pests and will raise farm productivity.
Agrisure Duracade is being used to create convenient and effective refuge-in-a-bag solutions for corn rootworm control featuring two new trait stacks: Agrisure Duracade 5122 and Agrisure Duracade 5222.
Syngenta announced the launch of Clariva, a proprietary seed treatment nematicide based on the Pasteuria technology acquired in 2012.
Clariva consists of naturally occurring soil bacteria with a unique, direct mode of action on nematodes: microscopic worm-shaped soil organisms, which cause significant damage to all major agricultural crops.
Syngenta Chief Operating Officer John Atkin, said, “Soybean growers in particular have long been searching for additional tools to manage the widespread cyst nematode problem, which in the U.S. alone causes more than a billion dollars of annual yield losses. Clariva will take nematode control to a new level and reinforce our global leadership in seed treatment innovation.”
Multi-year field trial data demonstrate that Clariva delivers immediate and long-lasting protection of plant root systems resulting in significant yield benefits.
Clariva is available for ordering by retailers to be used in the 2014 growing season as Clariva Complete Beans for soybeans. Further registrations across major crops worldwide are planned.
TeeJet Technologies Matrix Pro GS
The Matrix Pro GS Guidance System offers growers TeeJet exclusive RealView guidance over video along with several new productivity enhancing features.
Matrix Pro GS is the only system available that displays guidance and live video simultaneously, improving accuracy and efficiency in field operations. Up to eight RealView cameras can be used to monitor multiple machine operations while at the same time viewing guidance information.
Companies and growers can choose Matrix Pro 570GS with 5.7-inch (145 mm) display or Matrix Pro 840GS with 8.4-inch (213 mm) display.
Matrix Pro GS builds upon the proven Matrix and Matrix Pro product lines and adds many new capabilities. Advanced swath control capabilities now allow for automatic boom section control (ABSC) on dry spreaders and sprayers with offset booms.
Matrix Pro GS also supports droplet size monitoring capability. This exclusive feature provides real-time display of the droplet size being produced at the sprayer boom allowing operators to optimize their spraying application.
The unique NextRow feature guides operators through turns in row crop environments, helping them find the correct rows to steer between for the next pass. Matrix Pro GS is autosteer and ABSC ready. Adding FieldPilot or UniPilot assisted steering can greatly enhance operator productivity. Adding BoomPilot ABSC is economical and easy as well.
Véto-pharma S.A. Apivar Miticide
Véto-pharma S.A., the French veterinary pharmaceutical company specializing in honeybee health, announced that the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) granted Section 3 registration approval of its Apivar miticide effective March 11, 2013. EPA approval means that beekeepers in the U.S. will be allowed to use Apivar to treat honeybee colonies for Varroa mites, one of the leading causes of global honeybee population decline and a contributing factor in Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). Véto-pharma submitted approval applications for individual states.
“Apivar has earned an excellent reputation as a safe and effective means of controlling Varroa mite infestations in honeybee colonies,” said José Nobre, Véto-pharma’s president and chief executive officer. “Now American beekeepers can take advantage of the same benefits that much of the rest of the world has enjoyed for some time.”
Apivar kills up to 99 percent of Varroa mites in one application; it has proven safe and effective; it leaves no significant residues in hive products; and it is convenient and easy to use.”
Varroa mites damage honeybees by feeding off their haemolymph (blood), particularly at the larval stage, where they weaken the host bees and introduce other diseases, viruses and bacteria.
Several research projects conducted by scientists in the U.S., Canada and many European and Asian nations have demonstrated Apivar’s safety and eff ectiveness when used in accordance with instructions. Similarly, other studies have proven that residues of Apivar’s active ingredient in honey and wax consistently fall below the limits of detection, and are well below the strict limits allowed by many regulatory bodies, notably the U.S. EPA and the European Medicines Agency.
Apivar’s long-acting, low-dose formulation means that when beekeepers handle and apply the product as directed, they can be confident they will not be exposed to any hazardous compounds. Apivar does not emit vapors into the beehive atmosphere or the surrounding environment during application, nor does it require measuring, mixing or any complicated application procedures.
